AI is changing how we work. International business remains human.
AI is rapidly changing how companies research markets, approach customers and prepare for international growth. Large amounts of information can be organised, texts translated and initial analyses produced within minutes. That is valuable. But anyone who assumes international business development can therefore be fully automated underestimates what market development involves in practice: making choices, earning trust and taking responsibility.
At Crossborder Consulting, we deliberately use AI as an accelerator – not as a substitute for experience, personal contact or critical judgement.
What AI does change
Many preparatory tasks can be completed faster and more systematically with AI. This includes collecting publicly available market information, comparing regions, identifying potential customers and partners, structuring competitor data and producing an initial translation of a commercial proposition.
This saves time. A consultant can spend fewer hours on manual research and devote more attention to the questions that genuinely determine success:
- Is there sufficient concrete demand for the product or service?
- Which target group is not only large, but actually reachable?
- Why would a German or Dutch customer choose this supplier?
- Which commercial, cultural or organisational barrier is being underestimated?
- Which next step is justified, and which investment should wait?
AI makes information available faster. It does not automatically determine which information is reliable, relevant or decisive.
A list is not a market
A system can compile a hundred possible distributors, prospects or partners in a short time. But a long list is not a commercial strategy. The real value lies in assessing which organisations truly fit, who has decision-making authority, what might matter to them and which proposition can open a worthwhile conversation.
The same applies to outreach. AI can draft a polished email, but it will not always recognise that a phrase sounds too non-committal in Germany or unnecessarily formal in the Netherlands. Nor does a model automatically notice sensitivities arising during a conversation, when further questions are needed or when a prospect is simply declining politely.
International sales are not created by sending as many messages as possible. They are created when the right organisation is approached at the right time with a credible and relevant proposition.
Where people continue to make the difference
For Crossborder Consulting, four areas remain distinctly human.
1. Context and judgement
Data shows what is happening. Experience helps explain why it is happening and what a company should or should not do next. In market entry, one incorrect assumption can cause months of delay and unnecessary expense.
2. Cultural translation
An accurate translation is not automatically a persuasive message. Doing business between the Netherlands and Germany requires an understanding of expectations surrounding preparation, reliability, decision-making, evidence and communication. The difference often lies not in the words themselves, but in what the recipient expects behind them.
3. Trust and relationships
A lasting partnership usually begins only when people speak to one another, ask critical questions and honour their commitments. Technology can support trust, but it cannot automate it.
4. Responsibility
Business leaders must be able to understand what advice is based on. That is why we check sources, test assumptions and distinguish clearly between facts, assessments and recommendations. Responsibility for advice can never be delegated to an algorithm.
The best combination
The relevant question is therefore not whether AI will replace consultants. A better question is: which part of the work can technology complete faster and better, leaving more time for analysis, conversations and execution?
Our approach combines the speed of AI with human market knowledge, critical assessment and personal follow-up. This allows us to move more quickly from a broad market picture to clear priorities, suitable contacts and commercial action. At the same time, we remain sceptical of outcomes that appear too simple, too generic or too good to be true.
AI helps us work faster. People ensure that we work on the right things.
